18/08/09 - TRADE UNION BARGAINING AGREEMENT SIGNED

At the Trade Union / SW management meeting on 17th August, the long awaited Trade Union Recognition Agreement was signed and brought into effect. This Agreement sets out the model for collective bargaining between SW and Unison, Unite and the GMB and covers negotiation rights on key areas such as wages, holidays, working hours and other terms and conditions items.

Hopefully this will represent a positive move forward in industrial relations within Scottish Water and that we can use this platform to work constructively on a number of fronts. Given the scale of the challenges set by the Water Industry Commissioner, it is vitally important that the Trade Unions are fully involved in negotiations and discussions on key issues that affect Unison members.

Of course signing this Agreement doesn’t overturn a long period of conflict and mistrust. We clearly still have some areas of disagreement with SW Management and it will take some time to achieve an industrial relations climate that both parties feel comfortable with. We are, however, committed to achieving this.

In addition to direct negotiations on the above key Ts and Cs issues, we still have a legal right to consultation on all matters affecting TU members and the means of conducting this consultation is still to be agreed. We will be meeting with SW in the near future to seek agreement on the structures for consultation.
